Automad takes care of most metadata and icon-related details automatically, so pages are ready for browsers, devices, and social platforms right from the start. Without any configuration, sensible defaults are generated for things like page titles, descriptions, icons, and social previews. At the same time, Automad keeps everything transparent and flexible, making it easy to customize or override individual parts whenever more control is needed.
Favicons and Touch Icons
Automad automatically detects and includes favicon and touch icon files on all pages. To enable this, place the required files in "Global Data and Files" under the "Files" tab. Automad supports a favicon.ico, a favicon.svg, and an apple-touch-icon.png with a size of 180 × 180 pixels. Once available, these icons are used consistently for browser tabs, bookmarks, and home screen shortcuts.
Open-Graph Images
For social sharing, Automad generates open-graph images for every page out of the box. These images are created dynamically and styled to match the overall look of the site. Their colors can be customized globally in "Global Data and Files" under "Customizations", or adjusted on a per-page basis using the "Customizations" tab of an individual page.
A logo can be added to the generated image by uploading an open-graph-logo.png file to the "Files" section of "Global Data and Files". A square image with a transparent background and a size of around 160 × 160 pixels is recommended. If the generated image does not suit a specific page, a custom open-graph image can be uploaded directly using the Open Graph Image field in the page’s "Settings" tab.
Real-World Example
A rendered open-graph image for this page, including the configured logo and color scheme, might for example look as follows. The image is generated automatically by Automad based on the current page settings and global customizations, and illustrates how the page will appear when shared on social platforms or messaging apps.
Page Metadata
Meta titles and descriptions are automatically generated from the page content, providing meaningful defaults for search engines and social previews. This ensures that every page has sensible metadata without requiring additional input. When more precise control is needed, these values can be overridden on a per-page basis by defining a custom Meta Title and Meta Description in the "Settings" tab of the page. This allows individual pages to be fine-tuned for SEO and sharing, while the automatic defaults continue to work everywhere else.
